Diamond Quest Results!
Last night, I had the pleasure of witnessing the best from the Outback go at it for the right to be named the ultimate brawler! That's right, it was Diamond Quest again!
We had a field of six last night, from three-time Diamond Matt Simon to rookie Pslyder. Veterans of the Outback Xerzes, Chris and Stick stepped up to the plate, and last cycle's Diamond, Harris, rounded out the field.
For the first three rounds, Chris looked on fire. He jumped out of the gate and quickly went 3-0 in this round robin tournament. There, however, he hit a wall, and its name was Matt. Matt took down Stick (the only female in the competition) handily in the first round, but dropped a swift and hard match in the second round to Harris. Xerzes and Pslyder, on the other hand, went from one end to the other in the first two rounds, both going 1-1. Only Stick was left winless early, dropping to Matt and then Xerzes.
It wasn't until the fourth round that things really heated up. Matt (2-1) hopped into the ring with who looked like the man to beat, Chris (3-0). Chris jumped out to an early lead in the Pit, but Matt wasn't ready to give in. He caught up to Chris and then caused a triple-SUDDEN DEATH match, the score knotted at 4, then 5, then 6. In the end, though, Matt would give Chris his first loss and give them both 3-1 records going into the last round.
In the last round, two people had a chance to play spoiler. If Stick beat Chris or Xerzes beat Matt, the other would win. However, if they both won or they both lost, Chris and Matt would have to duel again in a "final showdown" for the title of "Outback's Best." Matt won swiftly and decisively (a perfect 5 in 5 shutout) over Xerzes to put the pressure on Chris to win. Not to be outdone, Chris put the smackdown on Stick, taking her down in 8 rounds by a score of 5-1. A final duel would be needed.
After a small break (while Pslyder and Harris stalled in their match), Chris and Matt met in center ring to see who would be taking the Diamond this cycle. Would it be Matt, who had held the Diamond three times before? Or would the recently crowned Overlord Chris win it?
The duel was fast, furious, and long. They traded points and kept it close the entire match. Again it would come down to SUDDEN DEATH. Again, Matt would take the win, thus giving him the Diamond for a record-breaking FOURTH time.
Congratulations, Matt, and well fought, all of you!
